RACER Project Highlights
- First time that environmental measurement data related to LANL are organized in a centralized database and are readily accessible to decision makers and the public without having to search through various databases or lodge a formal request
- First time measurement data are presented in a consolidated and uniform way from both Los Alamos National Laboratory and the New Mexico Environment Department
- Provides web-based tools to enhance stakeholders’ understanding of these data by allowing them to select, evaluate and analyze data collected in the vicinity of LANL through the output of maps, graphs, and tables
- Provides free hands-on community workshops and technical trainings for LANL, regulators, organizations, and all community members
- Provides stipends for mileage and time to help ensure that every community member interested in RACER has the means to participate
- Creates opportunities for new, innovative collaborations among government, academia, and local organizations and communities
- Provides a mechanism for the community around LANL to give feedback and advice on risk reduction at LANL
- Has been developed independently of LANL with the input of LANL, NMED, San Ildefonso Pueblo, EPA, local organizations, and members of the community
- Has maintained its independence from LANL through its management by an independent steward, the New Mexico Community Foundation
- Has the potential to save substantial amounts of money and resources by organizing key data and significantly improving communication between LANL and regulators
